Smoking Etiquette
Smoking is a very popular and wide spreading habit. Non-smokers have a very strong opinion about where and when someone should be allowed to light up. And smokers in their turn are likely to feel that they must not be bothered for their habit.
How should smokers react to all those observations from non-smokers?
First of all, smokers should be patient with non-smokers, as the majority of non-smokers do not understand that smoking is a very addictive habit that is not easy to stop and that many smokers do not want to quit. If it happens that a non-smoker rudely asks you “Why you smoke so much?’ please do not respond in a negative manner, as it will mean that you really do not think about other people. Just be courteous and resolve the present situation in the best way.
How to react when people ask you to stop smoking?
If you are smoking in a place where there are many people and someone approaches you to politely ask that you stop smoking, do not insult that person. Just move to another side or putt the cigarette aside.
How to manage cigarette butts properly
Smokers should manage their butts properly. You would never throw some candy wrapper on the street or on the ground and so you should proceed with your cigarette butt. Modern cars are equipped with special ashtrays and you may find a lot of trash cans on the street. Just make sure that you extinguish the cigarette before dropping into the waste bin.
How non-smokers should treat those who light up?
Non-smokers should understand that smokers are ordinary people that do not li9ke when somebody criticizes them. It is not you business why they decided to smoke. In fact, asking such silly questions would be similar to asking someone why he is so far or something unpleasant. All these questions are not polite. They know all about smoking and its effects and you should.
Smokers and non-smokers live in the same world
Just because you, a non-smoker, are in an establishment it doesn’t make that place smoke –free. Do not ask someone who is smoking in a special area to stop smoking. You may politely ask, for instance, “I am very sorry, but would you be so kind to put the cigarette out?” Shouting will not help you, but on the contrary would make you look silly and the smoker to light up another cigarette.
At the end it should be underlined that not only smokers should be aware of their surroundings, but also the non-smokers have to understand that the world doesn’t revolve around them. Be polite and you will get rid of unpleasant situation.
