Sexy women smoking. Does smoking help women look sexier?
Taking into consideration the increasing number of young women who start to smoke, wonder if it is considered as something sexy.
Julia Roberts, Uma Thurman and Winona Ryder smoke more on the big screen than people do in real life, according to a research that called them harmful role models for young women.
As trailers on which Aishwarya Rai is smoking go on the air, appeared the global concern, if smoking on screen is sexy. Not that it is the first time when an actress is smoking on the screen; the same effect was produced when such well known Indian actresses as Manisha Koirala, Priyanka Chopra and Kangna Ranaut promoted smoking as something fashion. But whether smoking women is a part of real world too?
In a country where cigarettes, hookahs and cigars were some time ago symbols that spoke of man’s manliness, though the approval to the fact may have been slow, the fact is – women have picked up with this trend and rather rapidly.
“What is wrong in all this?’ If smoking is bad, then it is bad for both- men and women alike. Then why it always causes perplexity when it is spoken about girls smoking, on screen or off screen?” said Jyoti Khurana, a heavy smoker who works with a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO). Nevertheless Jyoti admits that her habit is harmful, she said “the addiction for anyone starts almost identically. The fact that women are as independent and prosperous, and dealing with the same stress as men, the reasons for becoming attached to smoking too, are the same.”
As about women smoking on screen, “Probably those so-called “keepers of traditions”, who state that smoking on screen affects young women, close eyes to what the society has become with young girls now far from being those simple, stay-at-home and dependant women. When there are so many lifestyle novelties and changes that we are ready to accept for the good, these are only some other that come with the changes too. And that is what all these actresses are doing on big screens – describing the woman of today as she is. Then why this objection?” stated Anu Dayal, one who quit smoking a couple of years ago.
But indeed there is a bad influence and that is why some actresses refuse to even hold a cigarette, stating that if they do it will mean that they are promoting smoking, something that they are against of. “I don’t do it in real life and I will not promote this harmful habit on the screen,” stated an actress.
Smoking is a bad habit, and if it’s girls it looks even worse. And since actors are indeed icons for people watching them, their one bad habit on or off screen has a negative affect on children and teenagers. That is why it is important that filmmakers and even the actors/actresses realize the effect of such scenes and even try to avoid them.
